THE RUTLAND WATER CHALLENGE WALK - 24 MILES
About the walk and story -
I first became aware of Rutland Water in early 1988 when the
Anglia Water Authority contacted me to start a sponsored
walk - for Water Aid - off. Never having fired agun and walked
with more than 200 people, I jumped at the chance. On March
22nd more than 250 walkers assembled and I stood on a table
and wished them well as I released the trigger; we were off!
Never one for half measures I said I would walk it as well. My
companion was the authorities solicitor, whose pace suited
mine, and we had a very pleasant walk. It was he who
suggested that I should add the walk to my Challenge Walk
series and having walked it I couldn't agree more.
I never expected two years to elapse before ! walked it again for
this guide. But, in someways this was good as I would be
seeing the whole thing again with fresh eyes and not seeing a
chain of walkers infront or staging posts along the way! It is
a challenge to walk all the way round the largest man made
lake in Europe and anyone who completes can be proud to
have made the effort. It is not hilly or rugged terrain but
basically flat with constant views over the water, across
pastureland and woodland. There is much wildlife and wild -
flowers and several villages are passed or skirted. All the time
there is activity on the water from fishermen, sailors and wind
surfers.
The lake sits in delightful countryside and is certainly a land
locked haven. On my second walk I met a handful of walkers
and only afew cyclists on the track. The sun shone most ofthe
day and after 7 hours of walking was nicely tanned! Have a
good walk “around the water” and let me know how you got on!
