Beyond the ordinary
"THE JOHN MERRILL WAY" - 7,000 MILES
Walk the entire coastline of Britain - 7.000 miles, England, Scotland and Wales - on foot.
Walked for the first time, fully, by John Merrill. He created, devised and inaugurated this 7,000 mile walk, averaging a marathon a day, for over 250 days, with 50lbs or more equipment on his back, wearing out three pairs of boots and 36 paris of socks..
The rules are simple, walking clockwise -
Using the nearest right of way to the coast, be it path or road. Plus you can walk legally below the high time mark.
No ferries all must be on foot, using no motorway bridge, walking up the estuaries and crossing by the normal road bridge or transported bridge.
In Scotland you can walk anywhere once, but could be tresspassing the second time!
The actual coastline is 6,160 miles but by walking up the estauries you add another 700 miles. For example Spurn Head to Grimsby, only 4 miles across the humber, isa walk of 180 miles via Boothferry Bridge.
No island included - there are some 1,200 of them and have now basically walked most of them with separate guides.
Basically the route - London to Land's End - 1,300 miles. Land's End to Cape Wrath 4,000 miles - the whole of the west coast. Cape Wrath to Dunscanby Head - 200 miles. Dunscanby Head to London - East Coast - 1,500 miles.
On my walk I created other records - including the longest walk linking the three highest peaks - Snowdon, Scafell Pile and Ben Nevis - 1,300 miles. Plus the longest possible Land's End to John o Groats walks - 4.200 miles. I did a 1,603 mile Land's End - John o Groats walk in training for my coast walk. So within a 12 month period I walked Lands End to John o Groats twice, walking 5,800 miles!
He raised the equivalent of £361,000 in todays money/
MY BOOTS
All of foot - I wore out 3 pairs of boots.
John o' Groats
Still 1,300 miles togo!
