WALKING AROUND THE ISLE OF ANGELSEY COAST PATH - 130 miles
ABOUT THE WALK & STORT - I first went to Anglesey many years ago with my parents lor our annual vacation IN 1960. We had a cottage at Rhosneigr and from there explored the island. Apart from the making sand castles on the beach my only other lasting memory was Penom Priory and the nearby Puffin Island. WhenI came to plan my walk around the coastline of Britain, a few years later, I decided not to include any island - there are over 1,200 off the coast of Britain and although I have walked around over half of them, it is impracticable to do them all! On my coast walk and with over 2,000
miles walked, I walked up the Menai Straights and stayed nearby. My
guests insisted I visited the famous railway station with the longest
name, and over the bridge we went. I made a mental note to walk
around the island some day......1 didn’t expect to wait fifteen years!
I planned to walk it at Easter 1992 but the bad weather forced me to
cancel at the last minute - I worked instead! Easter 1993 approached
and I decided to have another go. Typically it poured with rain on Good Friday, but I decided to go there in any case. Once past Chester the rain stopped and the sun appeared - the long range forecast was wrong. I was soon across the Britannia Bridge and inquiring at the Tourist Office in Llanfair where I could leave the car. They said HERE! The omens were in favour and half an hour later I was striding down the road and embarking upon the walk clockwise around the island. this proved ground breacking, creating and inaugurating the first walk around th entire island.
I am glad I left the island for a few years for it was good to see half
remembered places with fresh eyes. The 5 1/2 days it took me was
magical. The scenery, the coastline, sea birds, people and the weather were perfect. I was stunned by the beauty of the coast and believe that the north-west corner has some of the finest to be seen anywhere. My aim was to simply follow the nearest right of way to the sea - often walking along the beaches. I absolutely enjoyed the walk, met no other walker and can’t wait to return to Britain’s “Treasure Island.” Have a good walk, for I know you are in for a week vou will look back upon as one of your most memorable walks.
