WALKING THE DERBY CANAL RING - 28 MILES
ABOUT THE WALK =
I first became “involved” in the Derby Canal in 1988 when I was walking and discovering the canals for my “Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire” walk guide. I was amazed then at what could still be seen. I planned to explore more fully but somehow the idea became lost. In a way I glad for a better idea was ahead
In December 1993 I had the unexpected pleasure of being asked to be the first honouree Vice President of the Chesterfield Canal Society, resulting from my canal book above. Two days later an invitation arrived to attend the launch o the restoration of the Derby Canal. I went to the meeting and immediately this ”idea” hit me ......... the result is this book!
The idea was to start and end the walk in Derby by walking the line of the Derby Canal to Swarkestone and the Trent & Mersey Canal. From here follov this canal to Shardlow and the River Trent to Trentlock. Here gaining the Erewash Canal and by following this to Sandiacre I could then reach the eastern end of the Derby Canal and follow it back to Derby - completing th:eDerby Canal Ring - about 28 miles.
Somehow I kept attempting to do the walk but other walks and books got in the way! Then as early October gave way to clear blue skies I set off from near Derby Railway Station, with three bars of chocolate! Nine hours later and two bars eaten, I was striding back over the River Derwent to the station and what a walk! I felt a great sense of satisfaction at seeing at first hand the remains of the Derby Canal in all its entirety. A great contrast throughout the walk, from a disused canal to a major one with narrow boats passing. I can only hopw
you have such a wonderful day as I and see at first hand the history of the canal and spectacular canal scenery. Let know how you get on. .............. “Happy walking!”
